Have a question about green building? Want to know more about materials, energy usage, air quality, or sustainability? If you live in Portland Oregon, the second greenest city in the world, don't hesitate to call the Green Building Hotline to find out how to make your residence or business more environmentally friendly. The hotline provides guidelines for do-it-yourselfers searching out the latest green building trends, contractors updating buildings to maximize efficiency, and anyone wondering "is this recyclable?"
The Green Building Hotline is just one of many projects Portland has undertaken in its pioneering efforts to become a more sustainable city. In 2003, Oregon's Portland Convention Center underwent a $116 million dollar "greenification" process, including a rain garden that collects and filters rainwater, all to save money on bills and reduce the carbon footprint of such a large building. The next year, Portland hosted the 3rd annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, a weekend with hundreds of educational programs and lectures lead by renowned experts on green design, open to the public. U.S. Green Building Council CEO Rick Fedrizzi, in his opening speech, said "Welcome to Portland, the city that gets it."

Last year, Portland launched a program called "Green Skyline" in the same spirit as the Greenbuild conference. This event specifically emphasized 5 of Portland's highest performing city buildings, the Convention Center included, and gave tours to the public highlighting critical changes– green roofs, natural ventilation, environmentally safe cleaning products, and active recycling.
