My Academic History

Curriculum Vita
Current Research
I am currently a doctoral student in the Department of History at the University of Southern California. I have been preparing for qualifying exams since the beginning of the spring semester, both designing my fields and reading the material. I have organized four fields that will inform my later work on racial formation and race relations in the Lincoln Heights barrio in Northeast Los Angeles between 1900 and 1970. My primary field will of course be Chicano History from 1821-the present and will help me situate my work within a broader Chicano narrative. I have also constructed two American History fields which will prepare me as a teacher and historian of the modern United States. The first part of the American History field ranges from pre-columbian times to around the middle of the nineteenth century. In this area I have chosen to focus on how 'whiteness' as a cultural force was consolidated and the actions/reactions of various racialized groups to the process. The second part follows the development of the modern United States from the middle of the nineteenth century through the end of the 1970s. I will emphasize issues surrounding race and gender in this particular field. My fourth and "outside" field will be conducted with a sociology professor and will focus on twentieth century immigration theory and politics. I hopefully will have reading lists posted shortly.
