The understanding of music structure is fundamental to computer analysis of music, and a precursor to digital music processing and manipulation. This course reviews the methods for representing and abstracting music structure, including key and harmony, rhythm and meter, melody, phrases and motifs, and section boundaries and labels. The class emphasizes learning by example, and learning by doing, and includes readings, writing, presentations, and discussions on contemporary scientific literature, and a final project.
