Brahms Experiment by Director Musices

Experiment:

We use an expressionless MIDI file of Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.4. The system accepts the MIDI tracks and converts it to .MUS format. The piece is a duet for two pianos, therefore there are two MIDI tracks for this piece. The target piece was obtained from iTunes.

Method:

The method can be described as the adding of different rules in different quantities to create pleasant a performance close to the target. Some of the rules were easier to control and you could find out how to measure them like Double Duration, Duration contrast and Harmonic-charge. Some others were hard to recognize the acceptable measurement for them as High-loud and Phrasing rules. For example, adding the phrasing rule made the performance more complicated specially when we changed the phrase level and duration (on/off).

I believe that pieces in which the offset and onset times are close will be much easier to control by such a rules system. For better result and having the more pleasant performance, adding more rules to the system would be helpful. In this project the comparison were planned by listening to the performances rendered with different rules added to them as feedback on which to base decisions for choosing the more acceptable performance.
