Student Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC)

When: January 30, 5:00pm - 9:00pm
Where: Campus Center Ballroom
What: SPAC

Engineers must be professionally proficient, astute and acutely aware of their responsibility to society. Student Professional Awareness Conferences or S-PACS (pronounced "ess-paks") explore the broader subjects that affect engineers' careers.

S-PACs were first introduced in 1979 as a method of increasing professional awareness in a student's technical education. Since then, these conferences have become a strong force for improving the engineering profession. S-PACs give students an opportunity to learn from the varied experiences of successful engineers.

S-PACs are structured events where students listen to experienced engineers from diverse backgrounds speak on a topic from one of six categories: Career Growth, Working, Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility, Self-Management, Engineers and Public Policy, or The Importance of a Professional Society to You.

After the talk, students have a chance to interact with the speakers and industry representatives in an intimate, low-pressure setting. S-PACs allow corporate representatives to see what students are really like and vice versa.

It's time once again for IEEE's Student-Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC). Held in the Campus Center Ballroom, this event will give you a chance to sit down with representatives of various companies in a professional dinner environment and not only talk about their experience, but also build important contacts in your professional network.

Attending Companies Include:
Aerospace Corporation
SAIC
Boeing
Sandia National Laboratories

and more companies to be added!!!

Capacity is limited. So Sign Up soon.

Join IEEE at USC for an evening of dining and networking.

Where: SLH 102
What: Academic Spotlight Series talk by Professor Willner

Join us for one of our Academic Spotlight Series talks with Professor Willner.
The topic of this talk is: "Optical Communication Systems: Innovations (and Their Needs) Abound"

ABSTRACT: The optical communications revolution continues, as the 10-year-horizon capacity needs are expected to grow by 2-3 orders-of-magnitude and the "Terabit/s Ethernet" might be reached. Importantly, optics might be a powerful enabler for additional transformative functions, including:
(a) stable and reconfigurable networking,
(b) high-speed signal processing, and
(c) low-power interconnections.
It is quite possible that optics will follow trends of the RF world, such that robustness, spectral-efficiency and functionality will increase dramatically. Some challenges in achieving this vision include:
(i) high-bandwidth and tunable technologies,
(ii) linear and nonlinear elements, and
(iii) maintenance of signal integrity.

BIO: Alan Willner (Ph.D., Columbia) has worked at AT&T Bell Labs and Bellcore, and is the Steven and Kathryn Sample Chair in Engineering at USC. His awards include: Int'l Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, NSF Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House, Packard Foundation Fellowship, NSF National Young Investigator Award, Fulbright Foundation Senior Scholars Award, OSA Forman Eng. Excellence Award, IEEE Photonics Society Engineering Achievement Award, OSA Leadership Award, IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Traveling Lecturer Award, IEEE Fellow, OSA Fellow, SPIE Fellow, and Eddy Paper Award from Pennwell Publications for the Best Contributed Technical Article.
