Objective 5: Know drugs and food for performance anxiety and discuss side effects.

        Drugs

              • Buspirone is ineffective.

              • Benzodiazepines are harmful.

              • "Beta-adrenergic blockers": It is used to alleviate some of the symptoms of acute anxiety reported by performers.

However, the use of beta-blockers is controversial.

It needs to be used only under the careful supervision of the prescribing physician.

It is more preferable to reduce anxiety through one's own direct effort.

             Food

               • Is it good eating a banana before a concert?

It is not proved yet. However, most people suggest eating one or two bananas about half an hour before performing.

If you have a long concert (2 hours or more), you can try eating another banana during break-time.

               • Avoiding high-caffeine, high-sugar, and spicy foods prior to performing instead eating easily digestible complex

                  carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables.

There is no clear evidence that specific food reduce performance anxiety until now.

It is not a good idea to be dependent on specific food for reducing performance anxiety.

The more important thing for a good performance is keeping a good health condition.
