Introduction
Hermanos Unidos, a Chicano/Latino male support organization, is working diligently on its sixth “Heads Up” program. As one of Hermanos Unidos’ primary community service projects of the semester we believe that we have a responsibility and obligation to give back to the community and do our part in helping others achieve their goal of being accepted into a prestigious university. Furthermore, we feel that it is our duty to take part in enlightening and preparing young minds on their road to collegian success.
Having this in mind, “Heads Up” will teach 30-40 high school students from the local community essential computer, internet research, and presentation skills that are essential to college work. Another of the curriculum’s goals is to inform students of the college search and admissions process, along with scholarship and financial aid opportunities through the internet and various USC sources.
Students will develop the necessary skills and confidence to meet the challenges of gaining acceptance to college, paying for college, and achieving overall success once admitted. As our ultimate focus is to influence more and more minorities to be enrolled in a collegian institution.
Head’s Up is planned to take place in computer labs at USC. It will be held on March 25th, April 1st, and April 8th, with the last day ending with the students making presentations to their parents and peers about their findings, and with a recognition and awards ceremony. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for the students and volunteers on all three days. Activities include:
- Introduction of Hermanos Unidos
- College Admissions
- Financial Aid
- College Life
- Tour of USC
- Web Research
|
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft PowerPoint

“HEADS UP”
Day 1: On the first day of “Heads Up”, we Hermanos will be doing an overall orientation for the 30-40 students that will be attending the program. This is the day in which we really try to form strong bonds and relationships between the students and their mentors. One of the biggest goals of the first day is to make the students feel welcomed here at our prestigious and beloved campus, and most importantly of all, trying to get them to start picturing themselves enrolled at USC. Thus, the first day will consist of many exciting and informative activities, which include: a detailed tour of our campus including some type of performance, introduction to college and scholarship research, as well as speakers on financial aid and the admissions process’ here at USC.
Day 2: The second day of “Heads Up” is one of the most crucial days of the entire program. One might even be able to say that this is the backbone of the three days. On this day, like the day before it, we once again keep building a strong bond between the mentors and their students. This day will consist of further information sessions on internet research, as well as a tutorial on a successful presentation. Us Hermanos will mentor the students on the dues and don’ts for an efficient presentation, as well as present them with a number of PowerPoint skills that will enable them to successfully research and present the college or university of their choice. Therefore, the second day will consist of the students working on their college presentations and scholarship research.
Day 3: The third and final day of “Heads Up” will be one that will be geared towards the students and their parents. On this day, students will tie up any loose ends that are left in their presentation, and will complete the final preparations for presenting the college of their choice. Thus, on this final day, the students will also be presenting their PowerPoint presentations to their parents and peers. This day will also consist of a banquet/award ceremony for the students, in which they will be rewarded for their efforts throughout the program. During this banquet, Hermanos Unidos will have food, raffle prizes, certificates, as well a couple of guest speakers for the parents and students to enjoy that will further inform them about the entire collegian experience.
In order for this program to run as efficient as possible though, Hermanos Unidos will strongly need the support and aid of all our sponsors, to ensure that “Heads Up” is as successful as possible!!!!!!!!!
