Health-Related Volunteer Opportunies

USC University Hospital Volunteer Program

Location: USC University Hospital
Time Commitment: 4 hours per week for a total of at least 80 hours
Eligibility: All students
Description: This was HPSA's most popular volunteer activity for the past three years. Volunteer placement may occur in either medical or administrative settings. Volunteers generally will not have hands-on contact with patients, but will assist with a variety of tasks to support the work performed at the hospital.

Trojan Health Volunteers (THV) Program

Location: Choose from a variety of health care settings, including LA County, St. John's, Orthopedic Hospital, USC University Hospital, USC Norris Cancer Center, Cedars-Sinai, King/Drew Medical Center, St. Vincent's
Time Commitment: 40 hours per semester
Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors, and seniors
Description: THV gives pre-health students the opportunity to gain experience in a hospital or clinical setting and learn about the various aspects of medicine.
How to apply: Sign up at the JEP house within the first week of each semester.


Health Promotion and Prevention Services Peer Health Educator Program

Location: USC Student Health Center
Time Commitment: 2.5 hours per week for a total of two semesters beginning with the Spring semester
Eligibility: Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors
Description: Peer Health Educators are trained volunteers who serve as hosts for the Resource Room and counselors/testers in the Anonymous HIV Testing and Counseling Program.
How to apply: Applications are available here and should be submitted by November 2nd.


Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Volunteer Program with the Pharmacy Department

Location: Vermont and Sunset
Time Commitment: Varies depending on schedule
Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors, and seniors
Description: Volunteers stock incoming medications and IV fluids, help pharmacy aide deliver medications to various departments in the hospital, sort processed drugs into different departments, and shadow pharmacists in rotation.
How to apply: Contact Deborah Ferguson (dferguson@chla.usc.edu), the manager of the pharmacy department at CHLA. Please note that it may take awhile to start volunteering due to various paperwork, orientations, and miscellaneous issues that must be resolved prior to volunteering.
