Research

.............................................................

My research focuses on the relationship between formal semantics and pragmatics. In my dissertation, I investigate the limits of semantics and logic for demonstratives (words like 'this' and 'that') in natural language. Building on work by Kent Bach, David Kaplan, and Nathan Salmon, among others, I show how we can define validity for utterances, as distinct from expressions, using the formal tools introduced by Kaplan for the investigation of indexicals. This opens up a range of data for our semantic theories of demonstratives.
