USC Fencers travel to Arizona for
2006 West Coast Collegiate Invitational
-In our first ever trip out of California,
our team of 21 Trojan fencers competed in six events at the 2006 West
Coast Collegiate Invitational at Arizona State University. Our competition
included teams from UC Berkeley, Arizona State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo,
UCSD, UCLA, University of Florida, University of Wyoming, UC Irvine,
University of Colorado at Boulder, UC Santa Cruz, and Temple University
in Philadelphia. Our women's sabre team, trying to repeat as WCCI champions,
faced tough competition in pools but took 3rd overall after a hard-fought
victory over Temple. Some memorable highlights included Scott Simon
losing only a single epee bout on the entire weekend, Darryl Hwang coming
back to win bouts for USC in Men's Sabre, Rebecca Van Guilder fencing
back to back days on the Women's Foil and Epee Teams, our Men's Foil
Team getting several decisive victories despite the loss of their team
captain mid-season to a nasty car accident, Adam Hsieh winning a crucial
clutch victory to push Men's Epee up in the standings, some terrific
fencing by our second epee squad of John Leisure, Adam Johnson, and
Jon Wingo, and an amusing team dinner at Organ
Stop Pizza. For photos of the event, click here
