AIS Diwali Celebrations
When : November 12, 2006, 6:00-11:00pm
Where: Bovard Auditorium
The Association of Indian Students (AIS) annually celebrates Diwali, an Indian festival, by hosting a culture show at USC. Indians celebrate Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, with much fanfare all over the world. Diwali is symbolic of a parable from the Ramayana, where an evil demon king, Ravana, is defeated by Lord Rama, a re-incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu. It symbolizes the triumph of virtue over evil and this festival is celebrated in the month of Asvin, on a night when the moon has completely waned, by the lighting of candles, earthen lamps called diyas and fireworks. This event is free for all USC students and eligible dependents.

Annual Raas Garba Nite
When : October 21, 2006, 7:00pm-12:30am
Where: Lyon Center
Garba is an Indian form of dance that originated in the Gujarat region. Unlike other famous types of Indian dance, such as Bharatanatyam and Odissi, Garba is much more similar to Western social dancing than the presentational style of the others. The greatest difference between Garba and western social dancing is that it is circular and is religious in origin.
The word 'Garba' derives its name after a lamp called Garbhadip, which means the lamp inside the earthen pot.
Held during the annual Navratri Utsav, or Festival of Nine Nights, it provokes the cities of India into light, colour, dancing and music, during September-October. Navratri is held throughout India at small villages as well as great cities. Amba Mata, the earth goddess bestowing strength and power against the forces of evil, enjoys special attention during Navratri by Puja in picsles and dances of the Ras Garba tradition. These dances normally begin at eleven at night and continue till dawn, at various sites, in different areas in each city.
