Current
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) enable users
with multi-purpose functions like locating places of interest
such as
restaurants, museums, movie theatres, etc. They also assist
the user to chalk
out directions given their starting point and destination
addresses. However,
these PDAs can only help with the above functions if the
user buys and
installs specialized software.
Our
proposed system would integrate a Global Positioning System
(GPS), PDA
and phone. This fusion will enhance the capabilities of existing
PDAs by
allowing the user to interact with local points of interest.
These functions
provide the user with:
• Information on near-by museums, including listings of current
exhibits,
maps and layouts, handicapped facilities and pricing if applicable.
• Near-by movie listings and show times and allow the user
to buy tickets
ahead of time.
• Near-by listings of restaurants along with their menu items,
daily
specials and their pricing; it will also allow the user to
set up reservations if
needed.
• Near-by nightclubs, opening and closing times, currently
playing live
bands or DJs; in addition, the user will be able to sign
up for guest lists if
applicable, avoiding the need to wait in line.
• Directions that can be mapped out to a given destination
from the user’s
current location with live updates showing the user’s progress.
• Traditional cell-phone functions, address book, and Internet
connectivity.
