CSCI - 538: Projects

Project 1: Individual Paper Presentations

Select a technical journal article (not trade journal) or item from the reserve list to read in depth. For Campus students, see Library reserve list (document entitled “cs-538-Sclibr 011508.doc”) in DEN Documents folder.

The article should be relevant to the class topics (see course plan/syllabus).

If you have questions about whether the article contains sufficient technical detail, e.g. an article that is not from a refereed journal, PLEASE contact T.A. for guidance.

If you want to review a "classic" article (i.e. ≥ five years old), contact me or T.A. for its relevance and worthiness. Otherwise, assume the article you review must be less than five years old.

Select a date to present the paper to the class. Schedule that date with the T.A.

You will have 10 minutes of class time to present the paper. Therefore, do not make your presentation longer than ~5 PowerPoint slides. In addition to the ~5 slides, each presentation should have a title page with the student name and paper title. Each presentation should have Conclusions and a References page for the specific paper reference and any other references. Thus, total is ~7 slides.

Take a stand. Review the paper both factually (what the essence of the paper is) and critically (state whether you agree or disagree with anything the author(s) say).

It is also ideal to check further into the paper’s references or find a related reference to further back up your assessment of the content of the paper.

Complete the “Engineering Research Paper Question-Answer form 011508.pdf” on the DEN documents web page. For your information, the form originates from: Prof. William G. Griswold at UCSD. http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/~wgg/CSE210/paperform.pdf

This is individual (not team) homework.
