Colin Sakamoto

About Me:

Colin Sakamoto was born in Hawaii.  For the first eleven years of his life he was raised in Hawaii.  His family moved to Yokosuka, Japan where Colin attended Yokosuka Middle School.  In summer of 2002, his family returned to Hawaii where Colin attended Mililani High School.  As a high school student, Colin exhausted the math and science coursework available to him, having taken AP coursework in calculus, statistics, chemistry and physics.  He then went on to take more calculus classes at Leeward Community College (part of the University of Hawaii System) during his junior and senior year of high school.  He was also heavily involved in music and the performing arts.  Some of his past gigs include MHS Symphonic Wind Ensemble, MHS “Trojan” Marching Band, MHS Jazz Ensemble, Oahu Band Directors Association High School Select Band, UH Summer Concert Band, Hawaii Youth Symphony and Oahu Civic Orchestra.  He was also involved in Boy Scouts of America, in which he received his Eagle Scout Rank and was also inducted into the Order of the Arrow, “scouting’s national honor society.”  In June of 2006 he graduated and received his State of Hawaii Board of Education Recognition High School Diploma, Summa Cum Laude.

In fall of 2006 Colin entered the University of Southern California as a freshman studying Electrical Engineering in the Andrew and Erna Viterbi School of Engineering.  Colin began to notice all the medical applications of electrical engineering.  All machines and medical devices used in medicine were designed and programmed by engineers.  Colin also began to see the engineering applications of biology.  He began to explore other options in the Viterbi School and by the following semester he was convinced that he should switch his major to Biomedical Engineering.

Colin is still involved in music.  He currently plays clarinet with the USC Thornton Concert Orchestra when time and scheduling permits.  He also plays trumpet and saxophone with the band Midnight Comeback of Mililani, HI.  The band plays primarily rock, punk, ska and Hawaiian/reggae styles of music.
