"Empowerment Through Education"

High School Outreach

CPE's main goal is our bi-monthly high school visits. A recent program evaluation revealed that CPE positively influences the students we visit to pursue a higher education. CPE visits an average of 6 high schools a semester, which are usually schools located in low-income communities. We talk to students about high school classes they must take in order to graduate and more specifically, we talk about college admissions requirements. We provide packets for the students, so that they have tangible information to refer to. We also give the students our personal contact information so that they may reach us if they have questions.

Scholarship Fund

Once students enter USC, CPE would like to help them in at least one of several ways. CPE fundraises throughout the year for its scholarship fund that is made available to all entering freshman and first-year transfer students at USC. The Scholarship committee board made up of the President, a Latino Student Assembly representative and three upper class students select scholarship recipients. The Mexican American Alumni Association has joined our efforts by agreeing to triple the amount CPE has reserved for scholarships.

Mentoring Program

Latino retention at the collegiate level is one CPE’s three goals. As a result, the mentor-mentee program was developed. A CPE junior or senior is paired with a freshman to serve as a mentor, attend study sessions together, and many other important activities. It is our vision that as we work together, we assist in graduating Latinos from USC.
