Echo Cliffs

  1. Take the 10W to the 405 N
  2. Follow the 405N to the 101N/W
  3. Exit Westlake Blvd ( CA-23 S)
  4. Turn Left on S Westlake Blvd and continue on CA-23 South
  5. Continue onto Mulholland Highway and turn right on Little Sycamore canyon Rd.
    Parking: Free


Horse Flats (Angeles National Forest)

  1. Take the 10E or the 110N to the 5N.
  2. Follow the 5N to the 2N.
  3. Stay on the 2N past the 210, through La Canada, and into the hills.
  4. Turn left onto Santa Clara Divide Road, which is about 2 miles past the Chilao Visitor's Center and approximately 28 mile past La Canada.
  5. After 2.5 miles turn left into the Horse Flats campground.
    Parking: Requires Forest Adventure Pass ($5 for daily pass, $30 for annual pass)


Joshua Tree (National Monument/Biosphere Reserve/National Park)

  1. take either the 10 or the 60 east from L.A. (they merge together into the 10 after a while) for 100 miles or so;
  2. turn off the 10 onto the 62 before Palm Springs;
  3. the 62 loops around the north side of the park.   Maps:

    • jtree.ps (610K): a high-resolution PostScript map of Joshua Tree from the National Park Service
    • joshmap.pdf (7K): a low-resolution line-drawing map of the main campsites within Joshua Tree
    Parking: at Joshua tree is at the campsites. A $10 entrance fee per vehicle valid for 7 days.


Malibu Creek (Malibu)

  1. take the 10 west; exit to the 405 north
  2. take the 405 north; exit to the 101 north
  3. take the 101 north; exit south (turn left) on Las Virgenes Road.
  4. take Las Virgenes south past Mulholand Highway. The entrance to the park will be on your right. Parking:
    • Parking lot within the park : $6
    • Parking on corner of Mulholland and Las Virgenes : free (10-15 min more walking )
 


Point Dume (Malibu)

  1. take the PCH (highway 1) north from santa monica; I-10 west dead-ends into the PCH north.
  2. drive north on the PCH for quite a long time; you'll pass Pepperdine University on your right (it's got a big open grassy lawn); the turn-off for Point Dume is almost exactly 7.0 miles past Pepperdine (check your odometer as you pass Pepperdine!)
  3. the turn-off road veers to the left from the PCH; there is a large sign just before it for the "Malibu Country Inn"; this sign has a big dolphin on it. the road is called "Westward Beach Rd."
  4. after you turn left, just follow the road...it goes right along the beach. we'll be climbing on the big rock at the south end of the beach. it's pretty obvious; the rock sticks right out to the water.
    Parking:
    • Parking lot closest to the rock - $6
    • Parking outside the gate: Free (if you find any - also includes an extra 10min walk)



Stoney Point (Chatsworth)

  1. take the 10 west; exit to the 405 north
  2. take the 405 north; exit to the 118 west
  3. take the 118 west; exit south (turn left) on Topanga Canyon Blvd.(also called the 27)
  4. take Topanga Canyon Blvd. south for about 0.8 miles. you can't miss the great big sandstone rock formation on your left.
  5. make a U-turn and park facing north on the east side of Topanga Canyon Blvd.
    Parking: free curbside


Williamson (Angeles National Forest)

  1. Take the 10E or the 110N to the 5N.
  2. Follow the 5N to the 2N.
  3. Stay on the 2N past the 210, through La Canada, and into the hills.
  4. The Williamson parking lot is on the left side, just after a right bend a little past mile marker 62. There is a decent size tree on the left side of the lot when you pull in.
    Parking: Requires Forest Adventure Pass ($5 for daily pass, $30 for annual pass)
