Welcome to the Virtual Tour of the Sanctuary of the Great Aten Temple at Amarna!
The purpose of this tour is to familiarize oneself with the basics of my directed study. To do so, one must first learn the geographical location of this study and the history that surrounds the excavations that have allowed myself to present this study. Next, the background of the Pharaoh Akhenaten and his dynasty will be examined, followed by a brief look at the change in religion and art during his kingship. Then the tour will zoom in on the Great Aten Temple of Amarna, looking first at its relationship to nearby structures and then to the many regions of the Temple itself. Finally, the Sanctuary shall be presented in greater detail, progressing through its various areas from west to east, noting similarities and differences to past Egyptian temple architecture along the way. The tour will conclude with a brief summary of the insights I have gained and the problems I have encountered. As a side note, I would like to state that the website I have created is intended for a more general audience than most scholars cater to. My main aim is to arm the reader with a general framework to better approach the sacntuary's difficulties. Hopefully by the end of this short tour the viewer may have his own suggestions which he may send to me on the start page under 'User Feedback'. I also must point out that more images of my model, my design notebook, bibliography and more can be found by using the nav-bar on the bottom of the home page. That is all that needs to be said, so enjoy!
