Assignment:

  1. Go to the the U.S. online patent literature

    1. Find a process to synthesize a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (not AZT) for the treatment of HIV.

    2. Find a patent on the use of combination therapy involving any two drugs (drug cocktail) to treat AIDS/HIV infection.

    3. Find a use patent for any HIV protease inhibitor.

    4. Find a patent on a therapeutic vaccine against HIV infection.

    For each of the four patents you have selected, supply answers to the following questions in a Word document, incorporating screenshots of the relevant patent pages as appropriate.
    1. Give the patent title, patent number, inventor name(s) and assignee(s) for each patent. Provide a screenshot of the first page displayed on the screen as a PDF document (your TA will explain how to take a screenshot) (8 points, 2 per patent).

    2. Give the name of the key drugs patented in patents 1 and 3 (4 points, 2 per patent).

    3. Give the date of expiration for patent #4 (3 points).

  2. Go to a regular search engine and search for a case involving an AZT patent infringement. Give the date, name(s) of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s) and summarize the current status (5 points).
