[1-2] The nephew of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president formed a Los Angeles based rock group in the early 90s along with the son of Chicano political artist/activist Beto. The band aligned itself with the different causes - raising awareness of police brutality, demanding the release of two death-row inmates, speaking on behalf of oppressed Chiapas and supporting Zapatist rebels in Mexico. The group broke up in 2000 and has recently evolved into a 'super-group'. Name this metal-meets-hip-hop band whose songs were filled with political polemic and the super-group.

## Rage Against The Machine. Audioslave. Got flamed for calling them a supergroup :'

[3] This blues crooner was nominated for a Grammy in 2000 in the "Best New Artist" category along with Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock and Christina Aguilera (who won!). This year she was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance along with songs by Avril Lavigne, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow (who won for "Steve McQueen") and Bonnie Raitt (whom she acknowledges as an important influence along with Janis Joplin and Toni Lynn Washington). Who is this lovely lady?

## Susan Tedeschi. Visit http://www.susantedeschi.com for a cool cover of Led Zep's Rock and Roll ... Tedeschi with the new Double Trouble ... look under Recordings and click on "Been a long time"

[4] Which mythical Pennsylvanian woodland creature connects Steely Dan's "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" with a song from the Genesis album A Trick of The Tail? Courtesy Rishi Sinha.

## Squonk.
I got flamed by someone for setting such an arbit Q. The lyrics of both the songs and the story of the squonk were so great that I couldn't resist making a Q outta it.

[5] Lifted from The Very Best of Cream CD. Just before their last tour, Cream recorded three tracks at London's IBC Studios including "Badge" which featured X (credited as "L'Angelo Mysterioso" for contractual reasons) on rhythm guitar and Clapton on the trademark bridge riff (or "badge" as he mis-read it on X's lyric sheet). These tracks, together with three more live tracks, made up the Goodbye album released in March '69, topping the UK charts and reaching Number 2 in the US. WhoszX?

## George Harrison

[6] This famous 1+ minute piece by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov is part of The Tale of Tsar Saltan Opera. It is considered very difficult to play which is perhaps why it a staple among virtuosos displaying their pyrotechnics, guitarists in particular. John Petrucci of Dream Theater has played it at a couple of concerts and it's also there towards the end of his solo on Once in a Livetime. Identify the piece.

## Flight of the Bumble Bee. Nuno Bettencourt has a version called Bumble Bee (Crash Landing) on Guitars Rule The World and Extreme II: Pornograffitti has "The Flight of the Wounded Bumblee Bee". There's also Jennifer Batten's Tribal Rage version ...she used to tour with Michael Jackson. I've been told Yngwie Malmsteen has one too. Talking about covers ... http://covers.wiw.org/

I also came across this site which had versions for hazzar instruments ... can't find it now.

[7] Identify this band which has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons and which believes in backward titling (probably to escape censorship or due to their playful "cleverness") Video: N.F.V.: Oidivnikufesin Album: Penikufesin Song: Efilnikufesin (N.F.L) Song: N.F.B. (Dallabnikufesin)

## Anthrax

[8] He was born in 1922, in Haifa, Israel, to Russian parents. He received his first violin at the age of five and gave his first concert at age ten. In 1951, he made his debut in Paris; and has gone onto play with the New York, Berlin, Vienna, Philadelphia and Israel Philharmonic orchestras. His first recording, "Le Concerto La mmoire d'un ange," by Alban Berg won the Grand Prix du Disque (Grand Record Prize) in France. He was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1988. Qui?

## Ivry Gitlis

[9-12] XX: "I lived at 9 Newcastle Road. I was born on the ninth of October. It's just a number that follows me around, but numerologically, apparently I'm a number six or a three or something, but it's all part of nine". XX and his belle XY changed their names so their combined names would have nine o's and that would lead to cosmic balance. XX formed a group XZ whose name was a dig at a very popular band XA at that time. In 1979, the "Spirit of Troy," the Univerity of Southern California's marching band recorded the title track for XA's album which resulted in a platinum album for that song. Solve for XX, XY, XZ and XA.

## XX = John Ono Lennon, XY= Yoko Lennon Ono, XZ = Dirty Mac, XA = Fleetwood Mac. The song with the USC marching band is Tusk. Dirty Mac = Lennon, Clapton, Mitch Mitchell (of Hendrix Experience) and Keith Richards.

[13] Which song/album connects [8], XY, XZ?

## The song Whole Lotta Yoko on Rolling Stones: Rock & Roll Circus has Howling Yoko accompanied by Gitlis and Dirty Mac.

[14] Cloze Test
Keanu Reeves: Dogstar
Russell Crowe: 30 Odd Foot of Grunts
Kevin Bacon: The Bacon Brothers
_____ ____: 30 Seconds to Mars

## Jared Leto

[15] Connect Pink Floyd's The Wall (Album: 1979; Movie:1982) to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Courtesy Saugata Chatterjee.

## Vera Lynn. Strangelove ends with the nuclear mushroom cloud sequence and Lynn's WW2 classic "We'll meet again". Vera song on The Wall refers to her and her song. She also *ed in a 1942 movie of the same name. Also according to imdb.com - The music heard playing during the opening credits of The Wall is "The Little Boy that Santa Forgot" performed by Vera Lynn. Vera's bio http://www.theiceberg.com/artist.html?artist_id=1117
Abhijeet Dwivedi had this to say: Kubrick wanted to include music from Atom Heart Mother in Clockwork Orange. But Floyd didn't want to associate themselves with the movie. Then the second connection is that Roger Waters wanted to include the voice of HAL9000 in his album "Amused to death". These are verified and correct fundas from the Floyd bio "Saucerful of Secrets".

[16] This song has been covered by Goo Goo Dolls, Bobby McFerrin, Living Colour (for the True Lies movie Soundtrack), Ella Fitzgerald, Toto among others. On Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes the bassist can't help himself breaking into this song twice. The main (perhaps the world's most performed ) riff was written by the bassist of the band X (which also appears in the quiz) after seeing Jimi Hendrix in concert. When the band broke up in 1968 Hendrix while playing "Hey Joe" segued into this song on TV as a tribute. Identify the song.

## Cream's Sunshine of Your Love.

[17] Which Harvard grad will you hear on Frank Zappa's Porn Wars?

## Al Gore. Tipper Gore spearheaded PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) which tried to clean up explicit lyrics in rock music. The Senate hearings is what you hear on Porn Wars. I don't recall Tipper Gore being on the Porn Wars song and she went to Boston College anyways. To watch Frank Zappa's testimony get hold of his Video from Hell.

http://www.chaozation.com/23/23vol11.htm for info on PMRC and Tipper.

[18] Rob Trujillo's past collaborations as bassist include Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Groves, Ozzy Osbourne, Jerry Cantrell. What's he doing now?

## Metallica's new bassist.

[19] Connect Santana's Somewhere in Heaven from Milagro (1992), Extreme's Peacemaker Die from III Sides to Every Story (1992) and U2's The Unforgettable Fire.

## The first two feature Martin Luther King's speeches and the U2 album is dedicated to King with songs such as MLK and ofcourse Pride (In the name of Love) is all about him ...

[20] Ob. progresive Rock Q (not counting the Genesis, DT Qs). Identify the band which was formed in Florida in 1981 as Avatar by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva (who was killed in an auto accident in 1990). In 1983 they took on their present name. Their symhonic rock operas/concept albums (any prog rock band is incomplete without one) include Streets - A Rock Opera, Dead Winter Dead, The Wake of Magellan. The band has Paul O'Neill as co-songwriter (with Jon) and producer. [Paul is the force behind Trans-Siberian Orchestra a unique group which is able to mount two touring companies due to the large numbers of musicians involved. So TSO cannot be referred to a band I guess!]

## Savatage.

[21] phylum: Chordata subphylum: Vertebrata class: Mammalia order: Perissodactyla family: Rhinocerotidae.

It lived during the late Oligocene and early Miocene epochs of the Tertiary period (about 20-30 million years ago). It is believed to be the largest land mammal that ever lived. The were found in central Mongolia and unlike its modern descendants, it was hornless, but other features clearly indicate that this huge beast was a rhinoceros. Its skull was about 1.2 m (4 ft) long, and it stood about 5.5 m (18 feet) high at the shoulder. A long neck and huge, pillarlike legs enabled the animal to browse among the higher branches of trees. They were probably limited to Asia, for their remains have not been found elsewhere.

Identify the creature which shares it's name with the title of a song by a rock group whose guitarist had this to say: "Everytime we heard that piece of music, we said, 'Wow, that's big, large. So what are we gonna call it? 'Big Large'?". So he just called it ________.

## Baluchitherium on Van Halen's Balance.

[22] Identify the Boston-based alternative metal group which shares it's name with this Alice in Chains song.

Care Not For The Men Who Wonder Straw That Broke Your Back, You're Under Cast All Them Aside Who Care Empty Eyes And Dead End Stare Don't You Know That None Are Blind To The Lie, And You Think I Don't Find What You Hide? What In God's Name Have You Done? Stick Your Arm For Some Real Fun For The Horse You've Grown Much Fonder Than For Me, That I Don't Ponder As The Hair Of One Who Bit You Smiling Bite Your Own Self, Too And I Think That You're Not Blind To The Ones You Left Behind I'll Be Here So Be Yearning All Your Life Twisting, Turning Like A Knife Now You Know The Reasons Why Can't Get High Or You Will Die Or You'll Die So Your Sickness Weighs A Ton And God's Name Is Smack For Some

## Godsmack

[23] Which literary classic inspired Robert Smith of the The Cure to write this chanson titled "Killing an Arab" (in bad taste for our present turbulent times)

Standing on the beach With a gun in my hand Staring at the sea Staring at the sand Staring down the barrel At the arab on the ground I can see his open mouth But I hear no sound I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an arab I can turn And walk away Or I can fire the gun Staring at the sky Staring at the sun Whichever I chose It amounts to the same Absolutely nothing I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an arab I feel the steel butt jump Smooth in my hand Staring at the sea Staring at the sand Staring at myself Reflected in the eyes Of the dead man on the beach The dead man on the beach I'm alive I'm dead I'm the stranger Killing an arab

## Albert Camus' L'Etranger

[24-25] Identify the person in the pic and connect him to this song

Lay awake at night, Oh so low, just so troubled. Can't get a job, Laid off and I'm having double trouble. Hey hey, to make you've got to try. Baby, that's no lie. Some of this generation is millionaires; I can't even keep decent clothes to wear. Laugh at me walking, And I have no place to go. Bad luck and trouble has taken me; I have no money to show.

## Stevie Ray Vaughan. His band Double Trouble was named after the above Otis Rush song.

Gratis fundas (for posting scores late) from the Rush FAQ about La Villa Strangiato ... http://www.nimitz.net/rush/faq2ans.html#71

71:What does "La Villa Strangiato" mean?
"Weird City" is a rough translation of the title, according to Visions.

Atthe Tossavainen has told me that "La villa, be it Spanish or Italian, doesn't mean a village or a city, but rather a HOUSE. Strangiato is probably just pidgin Spanish, a made-up word."

The song itself is based on several of Alex's nightmares and some cartoon themes. Much of this music can be heard on a CD called The Carl Stalling Project - "Music From Warner Bros. Cartoons 1936-1958." Warner Bros. - 26027-2 (approximately 77 minutes on CD). These are the original soundtracks from Loony Tunes/Merrie Melodies, mostly in the '40s and '50s. - thanks to jdinkins@polyslo.calpoly.edu for catalog info

schaaphe@serc.nl (Frank Schaapherder) gave me this information: The first part of "La Villa Strangiato," "Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds!," is based on the German song "Gute Nacht, Freunde," written by A. Yondrascheck. I noted the resemblance between the two songs immediately when I first heard "La Villa." The notes until the fast part are almost identical. Also note the similarities in the titles - they have the same meaning, and the reference to German in Rush's title (Mein Froinds).
72:Where do the different parts of "La Villa Strangiato" start/end?

This chart was made up by Brad Armstrong <71161.1313@CompuServe.COM>. Thanks, Brad!

Danforth and Pape is an intersection in Toronto. Actually, it's Danforth Ave. and Pape St. This is a heavily Greek section of Toronto, and even the street names are written in English and Greek. The actual intersection has a donut place (there are LOTS in Canada) like two banks and a random store.
