Studying For Online Degrees

Introduction

Studying for online degrees is the latest development in distance learning, utilizing the internet as the main source for the presentation of the relevant learning materials and opportunities, as well as for communication with the course tutors and other students. Courses of study leading to an online degree can be obtained from university and colleges that operate only in an online capacity or from ‘bricks and mortar’ colleges, such as Westwood College, that also offer both online and the traditional class-room based degree courses.

Reasons for taking an online degree

So, why should you take an online degree? First there is the cost of studying to consider. For a class-room based degree not only would you have to find the tuition fees but you will have travel costs and, if the college or university is some distance away from your home town, most likely accommodation costs to contend with. However, reasons for taking an online degree don’t stop at solely the costs considerations. If you have already started a job and want to take a vocational degree in your chosen career, suddenly taking long periods of time off from it will almost certainly not be an option. The solution here is quite clear, by taking an online degree you will be able to access the learning materials at times to suit you, that don’t interfere with your normal working day. Similarly you could be looking after a young child, elderly relative or person that was ill; again meaning that you cannot afford time out from your caring duties during the normal day. In such instances you can arrange your online degree study times to suit yourself. Alternatively you might in some way be incapacitated from attending a conventional ‘bricks and mortar’ college, this could be due to illness, disability or even a personal social awkwardness around a lot of other people. Whilst conventional colleges would undoubtedly seek to work with you to overcome any such difficulties - studying for an online degree in the comfort and privacy of your own home might, quite simply, be more within your personal ‘comfort zone’.

Online degrees for work and pleasure

Online degrees are available in a vast range of subjects and topic areas, and it’s probably fair to say that the majority of people who study for an online degree do so to either widen their work opportunities, or to help them to gain promotion within the company they already work for. Also, with the expansion in the number of small businesses and self-employed entrepreneurs increasing - owners of such small businesses and self-employed people are realizing the value of having a formal qualification in business. Being very involved in the day-to-day workings of their business and working long hours, attending a conventional college or university is out of the question. However, taking an online business degree from one of the reputable online colleges is ideal for them. For anyone already working for a company, whether large or small, your boss will undoubtedly be impressed with your desire to improve both yourself and your value to the company by studying for an online degree. So don’t be surprised if they are willing to offer you some extra time off in lieu to help you with your online studies. However, not everyone studies for a degree for work related reasons. Many people of all ages, including those who have retired from work, also study for online degrees for the sheer joy of learning or to fulfill a personal ambition.

Is an online degree equal to a conventional college one?

Now that is a very good question to ask and by following this advice you can ensure that you do study for a degree that is as valued as any other one in the USA. Unfortunately there are those charlatans and unscrupulous types out there that will claim to offer you the opportunity to gain an online degree - that actually turns out to be worthless. So, just how can you decide if the online college or university is a bona fide one and can offer you a worthwhile and nationally recognized online degree course? Well, there’s a simple answer to that question - check whether the college or university offering the online degrees is registered with either the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Colleges and universities offering online degrees in the USA should be accredited with a stamp of approval from at least one of these organizations. You can, of course, take an online degree through a foreign online college. However, if you do so - proceed with caution and establish if it is officially recognized by its domiciled national educational accreditation authorities. Finally, be very wary of things like the grand sounding - International Accreditation Agency for Online Universities. Such organizations have no standing in US education and are not even worth the time it takes to say their name!
