Building Location-based Services for Cellphones while Respecting User Privacy

This work was done in colloboration with Ravi Jain and Samir Goel at Google Inc during my internship. We designed a location-based service which gives the user the power to choose its level of privacy. Higher the privacy need, more resources will be used at the cellphone. There is no impact on the application quality. Thus, unlike prior works to maintain privacy which tradeoff privacy and application quality, we explored an orthogonal tradeoff between privacy and resource usage. A patent application based on this work has been filed.
