General Description:
This storytelling event seeks to create a space for APA activists and community members to share their story about their struggle for social justice. It will gather students from the APA student community and community leaders involved with marriage equality, immigration rights, and health care access to begin discussing the potential role APAs have in the social justice movement. Furthermore, the event seeks to illuminate the important intersections issues have in the APA community with other communities of color, as seen through issues such as immigration and health care access.
Structure:
We’re planning to have the first ¾ of the event reserved for speakers to share their story. However, this is not set in stone. Please feel free to comment on other speaker’s stories and take questions from the audience. This forum will be a respectful, constructive and open space for a closer discussion about the recent VKC Flag controversy, with its implications for identity, student exclusion, and University space. The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) and the Vietnamese International Student Association (VISA) will begin the dialogue and clarify current misunderstandings about the politics of the flag and student representation. Other student organizations like the Armenian Student Association and the general student body will have opportunities to voice their concerns about possible university exclusions and recognize both differences and commonalities. Faculty members Dr. Viet Nguyen and Dr. Janet Hoskins will contribute to this discussion and school administrators will also be invited. This event is an important foundation for further advocacy. Students can engage the University's current response and explore how student organizations can collaborate among themselves and with the University to inclusively represent a rich, diverse student body.
