| People of all shapes, sizes,
and colors are invited to take fifteen minutes of their time to
contribute two tablespoons of blood to register their marrow types
on the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Every day, patients
of over seventy life-threatening diseases from all over the country
search the registry for volunteers that could potentially save their
lives. By registering, you expand the national library of marrow
types and increase the chance of a match for these patients. Moreover, there is and has always been a disproportionately severe lack of registrants of color, particularly amongst those of Asian, African, and Hispanic/Latino descent. A cancer patient of color searching for a donor from the National Marrow Donor Program Registry of volunteer marrow and blood stem cell donors is 30 percent less likely than a Caucasian to identify a suitably matched donor. As such, MINORITY STUDENTS ARE ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGED TO REGISTER! This is a great opportunity for all of us to make a real difference in a person's life. These goals stand behind current projects of youth mentorship, health fairs, Hepatitis B community outreach, cultural events, bone marrow registration drives, and research opportunities. |
