Frequently Asked Questions:
How much of a time commitment is involved?
Typically, you will have a one-hour meeting and one social or professional event every week. It is not a big time commitment and allows members to participate in other organizations as well.
Is AOE membership expensive?
No, it is relatively inexpensive compared to the Panhellenic sororities. Candidates pay a monthly due of around $20 and actives pay $50 per month. These dues cover t-shirts, AOE events, travel to events, etc.
How long is the process of becoming a sister of AOE?
It is a semester-long process, but only takes up around 2-3 hours per week, depending on what is to be done.
"I want to join, but I'm not sure if it is right for me..."
We recommend you try it out even if you are not sure. This will give you the opportunity to get to know some of the actives better and you will also be given a "big sister" to help guide you through your semester and lend advice to help you out along the way. In addition to your big sis, you will also have a Membership Educator who will be in charge of your candidate class and help you through the candidate semester. If you end up deciding that AOE is not right for you, you are free to drop whenever you want.
What kind of events and activities does AOE participate in?We take part in a number of events, social and professional. In past semesters we were involved in the following:
Social: A semesterly potluck and other events with the engineering fraternity, Sigma Phi Delta, also various AOE events such as dinners, theme park trips, and our end of the semester formal
Philanthropic: Relay for Life, Pass the Can...
Professional: Conversations with Alumni - a panel of Viterbi alumni talk about college and life after college over dinner, Interview tips - one or two AOE alums will come back to visit and hold an interview tips discussion, allowing Q&A's, and much more
