INTRO

My name is Andrew Wong and I am a Chinese American living in El Monte California. I don’t have too many memories of my childhood, but I have known that my family has always been there for me. I have two big older brothers and despite an age gap of 14 and 12 years, they and my parents have left the greatest impact in my life. I see my parents as the motivational force that keeps me striving to be the best I can be. In my own life, I can remember growing up in Huntington Park and not having a whole lot of things that I wanted, however, my parents had far less luxuries than I and for that I am grateful. My oldest brother Edmund, is the first person in my generation and family to college. My parents on the other hand unlike my brother, didn’t quite finish high school. I remember how much we celebrated his success and I, since then, have set similar goals to follow in his footsteps. Then there’s my second oldest brother Wilson, who has been everything the term “big brother” encompasses. He would come by bus and pick me up from St. Stephens Elementary school in Monterey Park and be my morale support for any problems that I might have had. He works as a Deputy Sheriff for the county of Los Angeles and acts as a big brother to many people in communities far less off than my own and this is where I draw strength from.

Another person who has become close to me recently is my girlfriend Denise, who is the sister of a good friend. We met at my high school, Don Bosco Tech, which is an all boys school. There, I have accomplished one thing I feel many other students my age have never gotten to do before and that is a build an actual house, which was our senior project. My general interest in architecture started during my high school years in which I took 3 and a half years of construction and design courses. In my sophomore year at Don Bosco Technical Institute, I had gotten involved in one particular program called, ACE (architecture, construction and engineering) Mentoring Program and that fed my interest to pursue architecture. It was every week that the program would take us to downtown L.A. to see a few architecture firms and from then on, I knew I wanted to be a part of what I saw on those field trips. Then that summer, I took the Exploration of Architecture summer seminar and managed to get through student life as an architecture major and decided USC was the place for me.

I have not given much thought in the past as to what profession or career in architecture is right for me. Much of the type of architecture that I have seen through my high school involved a view through the eyes of construction. I also have a good understanding of the construction aspect of architecture, so I think I might want to continue in construction as a profession.
