Sherman Joseph Alexie, Jr. is an award-winning and prolific author and occasional comedian. Much of his writing draws on his experiences as a modern Native American. Born hydrocephalic, Alexie's initial prognosis was grim. However, Alexie proved to be an extremely intelligent child, learning to read at age 3 and completing John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath at age 5. Since 1991, Alexie has published 17 books that depict harsh reservation life, colorful humor, political outspokenness, and seamless invocation of history, popular culture and social commentary. Sherman Alexie's best known works include The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Smoke Signals and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

For students trying to get into medical school there are concerns about grades, test scores and acceptance letters. For Native students, the worries keep piling up after they are accepted. For students coming from a tribal community, the transition to the cities where many med schools are located can be unsettling. Native Americans are underrepresented in the medical profession. Does that put extra pressure on students looking to tack that “MD” onto the end of their name? Invited guests include Donovan Williams (Navajo), President-elect, Association of American Indian Medical Students.

2009 Four Directions Summer Research Program

Applications for the 2009 Four Directions Summer Research Program will be online on October 31, 2008. The applications are due February 20, 2009 at 5:00 PM EST.

The program is for pre-meds and takes place in Boston at Harvard Medical School.

The focus of activity during the summer is participation in a basic science research project. Students are assigned a medical school faculty mentor who will work closely with the student to ensure completion of a project over the 8-week summer period.

We are looking for students with a demonstrated commitment to the health of Native American communities, and evidence of motivation to achieve the highest goals possible. This does not require the highest grades (we do not request transcripts) or the most extensive research background (previous research experience is not required).

We do require the following:

* Minimum 1 year of undergraduate studies completed prior to start of program (June 2009)
* Demonstrated interest in careers in medical sciences
* At least 1 introductory science course (can include biology or chemistry)
* NOT taking the August MCAT (the time constraints of the program do not allow adequate time for studying for this important exam)

We're working with the USC Screen Now and Prevent program to raise funds to buy new cholesterol/glucose testing machines for their clinic. Help us and the clinic by donating to a good cause.
