Alternative Summer Break
ALIVE’s Alternative Summer Break – Botswana is a special opportunity to travel to one of the most unique environments in the world while donating your time to make a lasting impact in the community you will visit. The trip takes place during the month of July.
Maun, Botswana is on the edge of the Okavango Delta, a wetland area of the Kalahari Desert that attracts all of Africa’s wildlife. The Botswana Predator Conservation Trust, led by Dr. Tico McNutt and Lesley Boggs has been in Botswana for over 20 years trying to study and protect the threatened predator species of the Delta. However, they recognize that the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Botswana has caused a distraction from conservation efforts. To combat this, they have started the Coaching For Conservation program which uses soccer (Botswana’s most popular sport) to teach elementary school children “the 3 R’s”…
1) Respect yourself
2) Respect each other
3) Respect Botswana.
ALIVE will send 9 USC volunteers to be the “Conservation Coaches” for Coaching For Conservation and work along the soccer coaches to befriend the kids and teach the curriculum. The volunteers will also have a chance to build a permanent structure or create a project at a local school that can continue to be used forever. Students also have time to visit BPCT’s research camp to view the wildlife up close, sightsee, and travel to neighboring countries and enjoy the beauty of southern Africa.
