Relay for Life:
Join ALD at USC's Relay for Life on April 6th-7th at Cromwell Field. Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraising event for the American Cancer Society where teams take turns walking around the track to symbolically honor those who have been affected by cancer and raise funds in the hopes of finding a cure. New
Scholarship Opportunity from the Office of Academic & International
Fellowships:
Summer
Fulbright Opportunity in the UK for Undergraduates
We would
like to inform you of a unique cultural summer program offered by
the US-UK Fulbright Commission for students who have at least two
years left of undergraduate study. Summer programs are available for
US citizens who are over 18 years of age and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Programs range from three, four, or six weeks of study. There are
nine programs to choose from:
AIFS Summer Institute at Shakespeare's Globe
This program focuses on both acting and understanding
Shakespeare texts and the students’ studies are supplemented by
workshops focusing on combat and sword play, movement, dance and
design. This institute will take place from 15 June – 6 July 2013
Durham University Summer Institute
You
will participate in a major archaeological project focused on the
northern edges of the Roman Empire in Britain playing a full part in
the excavations and gaining first-hand knowledge and experience of
UK archaeological professional practice. The Institute will run from
30 June-27 July 2013
King's
College London Summer Institute
Experience an
exciting academic program at a top ranked UK University in the
vibrant cosmopolitan city of London. The Institute will take place
from 01 July-19 July 2013
Nottingham Trent University Summer
Institute
Experience a lively academic program that examines local culture,
history and heritage. The Institute will take place from 1- 26 July
2013
Queen's University Belfast Summer Institute
Learn about Northern Ireland in terms of its political,
economic and cultural relationships within the United Kingdom and in
the world. The institute will take place from 15 July – 10 August
2013
Scotland Summer Institute (NEW!)
Explore and learn about the culture, heritage and history of
Scotland, visiting the Scottish Parliament, museums, galleries and
sites of historic interest, including castles, battle grounds,
stately homes and areas of scenic beauty. The Institute will run
from 6 July-10 August 2013.
University of
Bristol Summer Institute (NEW!)
The theme of the
institute is Slavery and the Atlantic Heritage. Participants further
their understanding of the history and culture of Bristol in
particular and the United Kingdom in general. The Institute will run
from 1 June-29 June 2013.
University of Exeter
Summer Institute (NEW!)
Experience a rigorous
academic program at a top ten ranked UK University, in a city set in
the beautiful South West of England. The Institute will run from 13
July-10 August 2013.
Wales Summer Institute
Participants will learn about Wales – its culture, history,
its geographical differences and the role that industry has taken in
shaping the historical, political and cultural landscape of Wales.
This year’s institute will take place from 22 June – 3 August 2013.

New Scholarship
Opportunity: Beinecke
Scholarship for current Juniors - USC
The Beinecke Scholarship provides funding
for current juniors (students expecting to graduate in December
2013, May 2014, or August 2014) who plan to pursue a masters or
doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Students may combine the scholarship with additional scholarships,
research grants, and assistantships. The USC deadline to apply is
January 31st. Instructions for the Beinecke application

New Opportunity for ALD members: USC Mellon Mays
Undergraduate Fellowship Program
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship is a mentoring program
where fellows gain insight into an academic career by working
closely with a faculty mentor on an original research project. In
addition to gaining research experience, participants receive
mentoring, financial support, GRE test preparation, graduate school
preparatory workshops, and networking opportunities with top
graduate schools in the United States.
Interested sophomores and juniors may obtain additional information
as well as the application at www.usc.edu/mmuf .
Students must be committed to diversity in academia and desire a
career as a college professor in a Mellon approved field. A list of
Mellon Mays approved majors and minors is available at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/MMUF/programs_eligibility.shtml .
