Evolution of water
coolers
Water
coolers have come a long way from the days of simply relying on a block of
ice
for cooling. Modern water
coolers have to meet strict health, sanitation and environmental
standards,
and now come in many shapes and sizes. Water cooling dispensers also originated in schools and it.s only in
the
last few decades that they have become commonplace in offices and
workplaces.
The
first refrigerated water
coolers were bulky floor standing units which used ammonia compressors
to
chill the water. They were so heavy in fact, that they needed a forklift
to
move them. This inconvenience led to the design of wall-mounted water
coolers
which were more suitable to school environments.
The
next stage in the evolution of the water
cooler was triggered by health concerns and in particular the Safe Drinking Water
Act
1974. Firstly lead based components were removed from water supply
systems.
Then the elimination CFC refrigerants from the coolers soon followed, and
the
industry moved on to HFC-134a refrigerant to replace the
CFCs.
The
1980s brought improvements on the design and appearance of water coolers
and drinking fountains. As fountains
and
coolers became more accessible and practical, they also became more
attractive.
Curved shapes, rounded corners and contemporary finishes which blended in
with
the environment became fashionable and remain so to this
day.
Bringing
the history of water
coolers right up-to-date; in the last couple of decades, drinking
water has
also become very fashionable and bottled
water is now a huge global industry. Most water coolers are now seen
around
the office and are now so popular that they.ve become part of modern
culture.
The water cooler area is now associated with conversation, office chat and
social interaction. The Home and Office Delivery (HOD) system is a
convenient
way to ensure you have enough water available throughout the working day.
An
office water delivery service
means
you don.t have to worry about carrying heavy water
bottles
from the store.
Modern
day watercooler dispensers can include a variety
of desktop
coolers and free-standing cooler units. However, a watercooler system that depends on regular deliveries of bottled water
is
not always appropriate. In these instances, plumbed-in water coolers are a
much
better option. Mains-filtered water coolers are connected directly into
the mains
water supply, with the water passing through a filtration system, which eliminates harmful chemicals leaving
only
fresh tasting and crystal clear drinking water. In addition to being
cost-effective, mains-connected water coolers are also evironmentally
friendly.
