Congratulations to USC Fencer Laura Johnson

-At the beginning of July, Laura Johnson picked up her C04 ranking at the 2004 Summer Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina. Laura was top 16 in both of the top sabre competitions, taking 12th place in the Division I and 13th in the Division II Women's Sabre Competitions. Click here for photos.

USC Fencer Laura Johnson named IFCSC President

-Congratulations to Laura Johnson who will be the President of the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California for 2004-2005.

USC Fencers Compete in 2004 All Cal's Invitational

-Congratulations to Adam Johnson and Kathy Vilnrotter who competed in the 2004 All Cal's Tournament at UCSB on May 29th. Both fenced well and Adam took 5th in the Open Foil Competition. Click here for photos

-Congratulations to Laura Johnson who is the 2004 Southern California Division Women's Sabre Champion and who took seventh in the Senior Pacific Coast Championships in Las Vegas on May 9th. Click here for a photo of the medal presentation

USC Fencers Demonstrate Fencing for Elementary School Children

-On April 20th, USC Fencers travelled to Manhattan Beach Elementary School to demonstrate the sport of fencing in conjunction with the pirate theme of the elementary school book fair. It was a great time as the kids got a chance to witness a sport that is almost never televised, and a wonderful opportunity for USC Fencing to make some new friends. Click here for photos

USC Fencing Coach Scott Frank wins 2004 USC "Teachers Have No Boundaries" Award

-On Tuesday, April 20th, Dr. Scott Frank was presented with the 2004 USC "Teachers Have No Boundaries" Award for excellence in teaching both inside and outside the classroom. This prestigious honor was awarded by the USC Academic Cultural Initiative, stimulating academic growth within the university. Click here for photos

Congratulations to USC Fencers Jens Stephan and Yann Staelens

-Congrats to USC Fencers Jens Stephan and Yann Staelens who competed in the Sierra Nevada Open in Chico, CA on March 20-12, and the Boardwalk Open in Santa Cruz, CA on April 3-4. Jens won the Epee Competition at Chico and took 7th at the Boardwalk Open, and Yann took 6th in Foil at Chico and 10th at the Boardwalk Open.

Laura Johnson fences in NAC in Arlington

-Congratulations to Laura Johnson who fenced the Division II and III Women's Sabre Competitions at the North American Cup in Arlington, Texas on March 12-13.

USC Competes in Final Collegiate Tournament of '03-'04 Season at UC Irvine

-USC Fencing closed out the 2003-2004 season of the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California with an impressive set of victories at UC Irvine on February 22nd. USC placed 3rd in Men's Team Overall and 5th in Women's Team Overall out of the 7 universities who compete in the league (1st place and 2nd place respectively among the 3 non-NCAA teams). The team rankings for the specific weapons were as follows: M Foil 3rd, W Foil 5th, M Sabre 5th, W Sabre 4th, M Epee 2nd, W Epee 5th. In the individual category, Yann Staelens took home 1st place for Men's Foil and several other USC Fencers ended up in the top 10 for their weapon. Click here for photos.



USC Fencing meets NCAA Schools at UC Santa Barbara

-Trojan Fencers faced off against Cal State Fullerton, UC San Diego and Cal Tech at UC Santa Barbara on February 8th. Some of the impressive perfomances of the day included Alexis Demetriades who went undefeated in women's epee, and Yann Staelens who conceded only one bout in men's foil. Click here for photos.

10th Annual USC - Linkmeyer Invitational draws over 150 Fencers

-This year's USC-Linkmeyer Invitational Tournament was a great success, as over 150 fencers converged on the USC campus for the Open Foil, Epee and Sabre competitions on January 31st. First places went to Cedric Anen in Foil, Gershom Gannon-O'Gara in Epee, and Alfred Lara in Sabre. Several USC Fencers competed in the tournament as well. We were very pleased to have Mr. Dan Linkmeyer in attendance, son of Epee Champion and USC Fencing Alum, Fred Linkmeyer. Click here for photos

Yann Staelens Earns High Placement at 2004 NAC

-Congratulations to Yann Staelens who came in 29th in the Division I Men's Foil competition in the North American Cup in San Jose on January 17th. This places Yann at the equivalent of the top 50 in the nation (if he could receive USFA points) with respect to the rolling point standings of United States Fencing in Senior Men's Foil.

Princess Bride is a Hit with USC Fencers

-USC Fencers enjoyed an evening with Westley, Buttercup, and a horde of fans proclaiming themselves to be Inigo Montoya as the Nuart Theatre screened the 1987 cult classic, The Princess Bride. Click here to see a photo from the evening.

    

USC Fencers Compete in 2004 Duel in the Desert

-Congratulations to Adam and Laura Johnson who competed in the 2004 Duel in the Desert at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas on January 2nd and 3rd. Both faced highly ranked competition and fenced well against their opponents. Click here for photos

USC Foilist Competes in final USFA SoCal Tournament of 2003

-Congratulations to Adam Johnson who competed in the Open Foil competition at the West LA Armory on December 21st. Adam fenced well in initial Direct Elimination, but was eliminated by the top seed in the foil bracket. Click here for photos

USC Fencers Compete in North American Cup in San Diego

-Congratulations to USC Fencers, Yann Staelens, Jens Stephan and Spencer Kassimir who competed in the NAC in Palm Springs, California. Yann competed in Division 1 Men's Foil and Jens and Spencer competed in Division 1 Men's Epee. For photos, click here

USC Foilist Competes in USFA SoCal Tournament

-Congratulations to Adam Johnson who competed in the Open Foil competition at the Burbank Armory on November 30th. Also, much praise for Laura Johnson who ran the tournament, acting as bout committee chair. Click here for photos

USC Fencing faces Club Schools in 2nd Intercollegiate Tournament

-The Fencers of Troy showed their strength at the IFCSC Tournament on November 23rd at UCLA. Men's Foil went undefeated on the day, and several of the other squads had very close losses to challenging opponents. Everybody fenced well, and USC will enter the 2nd half of the season in good stead. Click here for photos

USC Fencers Compete in First Intercollegiate Tournament of '03-'04 Season.

-Facing stiff competition from the NCAA schools, USC Fencers were up for the challenge at the first team tournament of the season at Cal Tech on November 2nd. All 6 teams proved their mettle against teams from UCSD, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Tech. Click here for photos.

USC Fencing Promotes Trojan Pride at Homecoming Festival

-One of the most spirited organizations on campus, USC Fencing was out in force at Homecoming greeting alumni, explaining the sport to children and parents, and selling our famous foam Tommy Swords to the entire USC community. Click here for photos.

UC Irvine Invitational Sucessful for Trojan Fencers

-USC Fencers took top places at the annual IFCSC UC Irvine Invitational on October 26th. Notable victories were Serena Kuo (5th Foil), Yann Staelens (3rd Foil), Laura Johnson (2nd Sabre) and a rousing 1st and 2nd place in epee going to USC Fencers Jens Stephan and Yann Staelens. USC Fencers Compete in Long Beach Invitational

-Congratulations to Jens Stephan, Yann Staelens, Adam Johnson and USC Fencing Alums John Donchig and Thomas DeMartini who competed in the LBI on October 12th. Yann took 6th in the Open Foil, and Jens took 9th in the Open Epee while Adam, John and Thomas placed in the Open Foil. Click here for photos.

Fencers Appreciate Swordfighting in "Kill Bill"

-If there are swords involved, chances are we won't be too far away. Members of USC Fencing took a trip to see the new film "Kill Bill," and we all have a new appreciation for how hard it is to chop off somebody's head. Click photo to enlarge.

USC Fencers Compete in 1st SoCal USFA Open of the Season
